In 1997 three young players were expected to be the future of Bradford City after being given squad numbers by then manager Chris Kamara. Those players were Paul Bolland, Danny Verity and Mark Bower. These were exiting times for City and football in general as young players were going to big clubs for big money. Bolland was sold after only fourteen appearances to Notts County and Danny Verity was released after only one game. This left Bower as the only hope from that particular crop of players. Paul Jewell who took over from Chris Kamara still rated Bower and sent him out on loan to third division York (where he had a two very successful spells), with the hope the experience would improve him as a player. How right Jewell was because five managers later, Bower has grown into a terrific Defender alongside David Wetherall and has filled the gap left by O’Brien. In the 2004/2005 Season Mark was an ever present and was rightfully voted the player of the year for his solid and consistent performances.

It is now hoped that Bower can go on to become the heart of Bradford City’s defence for years to come, and maybe even take over the captaincy when Wethers quits. Here’s to another player of the year award!!!!
